Step Back In Time

Smallwood Store Tour

Step back in time on our historic Smallwood Store Tour Launching from the Barron River in Everglades City.

You’ll begin the tour by cruising along the Everglades City waterfront as you make your way out to Everglades National Park and the 10,000 Islands.  Along the way you’ll see the famous Stone Crab fleet lined up along the river, and some great waterfront restaurants as well.… Camellia Street Grill, Triad Seafood, City Seafood and even the historic Rod & Gun Club!

Once you make it to the islands, you’ll cruise through Everglades national Park in search of Dolphin, Rosette
Spoonbill and Manatee.  You’ll make your way through the maze of mangrove Islands that were once inhabited by the ancient Calusa  Indians and early settlers.  As you emerge from the islands, you’ll see the old store sitting proudly a top Chokoloskee Island.

When you first enter the store you’ll be transported to the early days of Florida’s frontier. The Ted Smallwood Store is mentioned in every history book written about the Everglades. It was established in 1906 and was the post office and trading post for the area. The Smallwood Store is the last remaining authentic trading post in the state and was placed on the national registry of historic places in 1974. The store stands today as a time capsule of life in  the early frontier days of the Everglades and 10,000 islands.
